On my last visit to New York, I was lucky enough to catch the Mixtape Comedy Show at Gotham Comedy Club as the guest of Royale Watkins.

Royale is a hilariously funny comedian and a very gracious host. I met him through our mutual friend @MsAngelaRenee who is also a fan and great supporter of this enormously gifted entertainment personality. I’ve had so many wonderful exchanges with Royale, like one time in particular I remember asking him about the Ricky Bobby. (Well, I had never heard of it!!) Without skipping a beat, he explained to his audience, he said, ahem “for my Caucasian friends”, The Ricky Bobby is a type of dance and he sent me the link to share with my tweeps. So, you know we share things like cross-culturally, I guess you would say and I became a giant fan of his soul because he gave me that gift.
Royale has hosted his own TV special and produces shows that always have an amazing lineup. Past guests at Gotham include Charlie Murphy, Jeremy Sisto, Sherri Shepherd, Kym Whitley, Donnell Rawlings, and 30 Rock’s Tracey Morgan.
Royale introduced me to Anthony Anderson who headlines the Mixtape series. Anthony is having great success as an actor right now and was fresh off the set of Transformers. Towards the end of his set, Anthony did a reunion bit with @TheRealPepa (formerly with SaltNPepa). He said they used to work together at the JC Penny, but I’m not sure if that was a joke or if it was true. Either way it was very entertaining. I had a blast meeting all of them. Good times and great laughs. There are very few things I enjoy more than laughing and Gotham always delivers! As always, I had great seats, of course the club is small enough that all seats afford an outstanding view. I sat with one of the producers of MTV’s Made and we mostly geeked about camera equipment. Yeah, it was a blast! Thank you Royale Watkins. I wish you much success with your excellent series!
Here are some Mixtape highlights from August. I think my favorite bit is towards the end, a hilarious Michael Jackson piece by Donnell Rawlings. Donnell is the kind of comic who can transform even this terribly tragic loss into a celebration of life. View more at the Mixtape Comedy Show web site.
